Ortega (SQ3)

Ortega

"My, my, this is one hot planet! Hopefully you'll last more than a few minutes."

Room ID#(s): 60 - 64, 66 - 75
Bugs & Glitches: Yes

Ortega is a location in Space Quest III. It is accessible at any point he is in command of his ship and light speed is functional, however, once he has completed his mission on the planet, returning there is akin to suicide.

Ortega is one hot planet. Without Thermoweave Underwear, Roger only has about 9 seconds to live (depending on where he is on the planet), so unless he is wearing them, get back in the ship, immediately.

Upon exploring Ortega, he comes across some equipment and two uniformed men who are identified as Scumsoft employees, armed with jello pistols. Eventually, they finish their work and leave the planet without noticing Roger's presence (or they do, and do not take any direct action against him). This allows Roger to obtain a conveniently-placed detonator and drop it in the shield generator that protects Pestulon, however, this also triggers a series of quakes that threaten to rip apart the entire surface of the planet. The game subtly hints that Roger should get off this planet AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE.

Spelling Errors

75.txt It wouldn't do any good to do that here. Besides, you'll probably just blow your own foot off.
  • Being more of a conditional statement, the proper to use here would be 'you would'.
600.txt It would be a little embarassing to disrobe out here on the planets' surface. Why not go back to your ship?

Starting at the farthest screen to the right just after crossing the unstable bridge, go diagonal down-left ([END] key) this will move the player 2 screens (1 down, 1 left) and place Roger in a spot between impassable control layers, leaving Roger stuck. In addition Roger will move around the screen much faster than normal.

The player can escape from this by moving upwards, though the walking animation will remain a mess. This is fixed by crossing the bridge.

In Room 69, Roger does not have an "Ohhh Nooo" show up as he falls into the chasm around the rocks in the middle of the room. It is possible the rocks in front of the chasm may block the sprite from appearing, though it is unusual for it not to appear at all.

To do this, the player must walk 1 screen to the right of where the bridge is (do not cross it). Try to get as close to the far right edge of the screen while being as close to the edge of the rocks (along the bottom path). Then, walk diagonal right-up as the screen changes. This may take a few tries, but if done right, Roger will start above the chasm, but not fall through because the player has touched a boundary line that tells the game to kill Roger. However, this affect does appear to mess with how quickly Roger walks around the map.

To make it back to the ship, Roger needs to carefully follow the chasm around by walking up a screen, then left (around the land mass) and then down (lower-left corner). If done right, the player will end up right by the ship. Though walking will still seem awkward, it is very possible to re-enter the ship.

This is useful for a low-score run where not grabbing the pole and not jumping the chasm will save the player from collecting several points.

Ortega is survivable without buying and wearing the Thermoweave Underwear.

To enable this glitch, the player must walk left to the next screen, wait a few seconds. Normally, the death counter would kill Roger when it reaches 1, but both the ship and screen to the left do not have this trigger (at least on the right side of the screen). Walk downwards, the immediate diagonal up-right back up into this screen as the screens change. If this is done right, you will get the warning about the surface being too hot to survive, but this will not kill the player. However, Roger will be (temporarily) stuck on the dying animation that cycles through while the player walks around on the screen. This changes if the player returns to the ship or attempts to cross the unstable bridge.

This is useful for a low-score run where not wearing the underwear means they do not have to purchased, which also Roger does not require money, allowing him to keep the glowing gem.

A frankly bizarre glitch.

There is walkable terrain on the force field generator screen that causes Roger to switch to a crawling animation and be forced downwards if he's not moving. If the player directs Roger onto the nearby ladder, he'll climb up and get back on his feet. The unwalkable edges around the room now cause Roger's movement to completely freak out and make him move in most unpredictable ways. If the player moves immediately left after climbing back up the ladder, there's a good chance Roger's movement will result in him going out of bounds. The player can press the directional buttons again to regain control at any time during Roger's movement.

  • While not consistent, most of the time Roger's awkward movements direct him towards the big hole in the field generator or falling hotspots on the side, former of which can be seen in the second gif.

  • The reason this glitch works is due to an oversight with the control layers in the room. There is a cyan control layer on the bottom-left part of the dome. It forces Roger into a crawling sprite and will forcibly send him downwards if he isn't moving. He will also be sent downwards if he collides with the wall edge to the left. Standing on the green control layer above this one will restore him to normal. The cyan control has the additional effect of setting Roger's Avoider to Avoid. What this means is rather being stopped by wall edges, he'll try to move his way around them to get where he needs to go. The green control is supposed to set his Avoider back to 0. The problem is that script only runs if local3 = 1. Local3 is set to 1 once that script is runs and is set to 0 when on the cyan. However, it is ALSO set to 1 when climbing up the ladder. Moving onto the ladder from cyan causes local3 to be set to 1 and since the game script sees local3 = 1, it doesn't bother running the green control code. So Roger's Avoider remains on Avoid and that's the reason why the bug occurs.

OK. I have mucho paperwork to finish.
